How to get where? Flight tickets to Baku are not quite cheap, but if you plan in advance and are smart as my friends from Zurich, who recently have managed to book tickets for less than 350 Euro visiting the ESC 2012 in Baku. Use internet search sites like scyscanner.net and find low cost carriers (AirBaltic, Flypegasus, Onurair) which fly to capital as well as to the second largest city of Azerbaijan – Ganja. By the way flight tickets of one famous carrier Turkish Airlines to Ganja from Western Europe is much cheaper! The best option is to use direct flights of the national carrier AZAL to Baku from Istanbul, Ankara, Moscow, St. Petersburg, London, Paris, Rome, Milano and Prague.
How to reach Baku center from the GYD airport? There is a direct bus connection from the Baku International airport to the city center which is unfortunately not available before 07:00 and after 22:00. So if you arrive during the daytime, you can use the bus shuttle №116, which stops just in front of the arrival terminal at the airport GYD. The last stop and starting point of this shuttle is the Samed Vurgun Garden which is next to the apartment’s building. Price for one ride with this bus is approximately 0.30-0.50 AZN. Due to the ESC 2012 24 hours operating convenient shuttle from the airport to the downtown is organized for ESC visitors. Price - 1 AZN. Taxi pick up from the Baku International Airport can be booked either for 20 AZN (+994 55 83071 98), please be advised that taxis at the airport are in most cases unreasonable expensive (at least 35 AZN – 1 AZN = 0.78 USD/1.02 EURO).
5 star hotels too expensive? Try private accommodation! There are almost all famous chains of 5 star hotels in Baku, but if you don’t want to ruin your travel budget right on the first night, look for more advantageous options. Unfortunately there are not still many hotels with moderate prices in Baku; At the moment lowest rates of centrally located hotels start from 50 AZN, if you know some under this rate inform us. Another option would be to find private accommodation: rent a nice apartment preferable in the center of city! Prices can range from 40 AZN to 100 AZN. Many tourists choose this option and are happy with their experience. For further information check this page out: www.baku-apartment.tk
Where to get some cash or change money? There are many cash machines in Azerbaijan, use your cards although in most cases it is better to change into local currency. You can find exchange offices, which would buy your USD and EUR almost everywhere. But the best exchange rates you will find on the 28 may street in the direction to the downtown. On the attached map: from right to the left. There are more than 10 small exchange offices with the best exchange rates of Baku on 28 May Street, here you can even sell your zloty, YTL and all other currencies.
How to move on? Baku has a relatively good public transportation system consisting of many bus lines and underground system with 25 stations. One bus ride in Baku costs only 0.20 AZN in each direction, no matter how far you go as long as you are within city. In the Azerbaijani public transport money should be handed out to the driver as you get off from the bus at your final destination. Except in the Baku Metro – underground system – where you should obtain a card and upload to it some credits for use – one ride with a Metro costs also only 0.20 AZN. Metro card can be reimbursed upon departure if you give it back to Metro sale office where you have bought it. Both in busses and in metro during rush hours you can experience too much of intimacy
How to move quickly within Baku? Taxis are of course the quickest transportation mean and more convenient in comparison to occasionally overcrowded busses. There are probably some issues to be considered before getting into a cab. In order to avoid some expensive surprises, negotiate the price for taxi services with a driver, if it is not a call taxi with regular taximeter or definitely hat not a taximeter:) Dialing the following numbers in Azerbaijan, you can book a taxi even in English: #189 taxi reservation with price guarantee information, #9000 – London cab with taximeter.
What to taste? Definitely one of the famous Azerbaijani soups, like piti, made of pieces of mutton on the bone cooked with vegetables in a broth and served in a clay pot, or the delicious plov consisting of saffron-covered rice, fried meat, dried fruits, eggs or fish and aromatic herbs. Don’t forget to check out one of bakeries of Cudo Pecka chains, regular gourmet can find here almost everything starting from a snack for eating right in a bakery and finishing with luxury torts to take away.
Where to go? If you have already seen most of Baku (Nizami str.; Seaside boulevard, Icheri Sheher, Istiqlaliyyet str.; Parlament squaere ), go for a great day-trip, to the UNESCO-protected Gobustan National Park, south of Baku. Expect spectacular mountains, ragged ravines, mud volcanoes and prehistoric petroglyphs, as well as graffiti from times of Alexander the Great and Trajan.
What to bring back? Armudi stakan (tea glass), carpets, silk, musical instruments and copper products from the bazaar, colorful knitted socks, halva (best is from Sheki), tea and saffron.
How to communicate? Unfortunately most of people in Azerbaijan do not speak English; this is one of the biggest difficulty to meet someone in Baku((( Learn Azerbaijani, or at least some Russian or Turkish if you want to find your love in Baku))) If you are at the right place and in right clothes you can find many young intelligent boys and girls who have studied abroad and have a high cultural level. You can recognize them on expensive outfit and designer shoes)))
How to blend in? Sip some tea and try your hand at nard, the Azerbaijani version of backgammon, in one of the tearooms, and you are likely to be invited to someone’s home for some fresh dolma and a chat.
